Cal Poly Women Cagers Have Historical Edge Over Dominguez Hills in Conference Opener

January 10, 1985

After completing a grueling non-conference schedule with a 9-6 record, the Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team will start its second season when it hosts Cal State Dominguez Hills in its California Collegiate Athletic Assn. opener at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Poly Pavilion.

Dominguez Hills has won 10 of its first 11 games, its best start ever. But the Toros have played mostly NCAA Division II teams while Pomona (a Division II team) played 14 Division I teams.

Pomona's Broncos, considered the conference title favorite, finished a three-game trip to Texas and Louisiana on Monday with an 84-79 overtime loss to highly regarded Louisiana State to finish 8-6 against Division I teams.

The Broncos, coached by Darlene May, are led by 6-2 senior center Janine Phillips, who averages 11.7 points and 7.3 rebounds, and 6-0 junior forward Vickie Mitchell, who averages 10.7 points and 10.8 rebounds.

Pomona has made only 40% of its field goal attempts and 56% of its free throw tries but the Broncos have out-rebounded most of their opponents.

Dominguez Hills, which has not beaten the Broncos in eight previous games, has a strong rebounding team led by 6-0 forward Adrienne Harris, who is averaging 11 rebounds and 15 points a game. Forward Sherrian Ellison (5-9) and center Deadrea Johnson (5-10) also are outstanding scorers and rebounders.
