Girls Roundup : Bell Leads Santa Ana Valley Past Santa Ana, 38-22

Junior center Tamika Bell scored 13 points and had 20 rebounds as Santa Ana Valley High School defeated cross-town rival Santa Ana, 38-22, Tuesday.

The victory is the Falcons' second in Century League play. Santa Ana Valley (2-2 in league), took control of the game early by outscoring the Saints, 17-2, at one stretch in the first half. Santa Ana Valley led 23-8 at the half. Rebounding was the key in the Falcons win, junior forward Tamera Bethune did Bell's performance one better by getting 21 rebounds. Junior guard Cathy Smith added 11 points for the Falcons, Lolly Figueroa led Santa Ana with seven points.

In other Century League action:

Foothill 87, Villa Park 24--The Knights were led by guard Jennifer Osur's 23 points. Center Chris McFerson had 14 points and 9 rebounds. The Knights are 13-3 overall and 4-0 in the league. They went 14-0 last season in league. Key to the Knights win was a ball-hawking defense that produced 23 steals.

In Angelus League action:

Mater Dei 68, St Joseph 38--The Monarchs led from the start, getting good performances from all of their starters. Guard Mary Gainey had 14 points and 5 assists, Kim Ellerman added 12 points and led the team with 8 rebounds. Katia Diehl and Gerri Gainey each had nine points. Lisa Podefta of St. Joseph had nine points.

The Monarch's improved their record to 16-3 overall and 3-0 in league play. They face St. Paul at Mater Dei on Thursday.

In Empire League action:

El Dorado 77, Pacifica 44--Jill Matyuch and Cathy Newvine combined to score 53 points for the Golden Hawks. Newvine scored a season-high 32 points and forward Matyuch added 21. The win improved El Dorado's record to 6-6 overall and 3-2 in league.

Loara 65, Cypress 27--Center Shanna Beer had another big game for the Saxons, scoring 28 points to lead Loara to its third win in league play. Carolyn Osato added 16 points and Liz Eldridge had 9 points and game-high 16 rebounds. The win sets up a showdown at Loara Thursday between the Saxons and Esperanza.

Esperanza 58, Kennedy 43--Jennifer LaPaglia had 14 points and 12 rebounds to lead Esperanza to its fifth victory without a defeat in league play.

In Freeway League action:

Fullerton 68, Buena Park 43--Senior forward Pam Fritsch scored a season-high 28 points and had 11 rebounds in the Indians' win at Fullerton. With the game tied at 30, Fullerton outscored Buena Park, 21-6, in the third quarter. It was Fullerton's own poor shooting that kept the game close, the Indians shot just 37%, making 25 of 67 field goal attempts.

The Indians are 8-4 overall and 1-0 in league. They face Troy Thursday at Fullerton.

In Orange League action:

Savanna 48, Magnolia 35--High scoring Michelle Carter, averaging almost 30 points per game, was held to 19 as the Rebels won their league opener. Venetta Dorlis led Savanna with 13 points. Nancy Williams added 11.

In Sea View League action:

Woodbridge 65, Corona del Mar 33--Center Sharon Lyon led the Warriors with 24 points on 10-of-15 shooting. The Warriors have won seven straight and are 4-0 in league play.

Costa Mesa 45, University 16--The Mustangs shut out the Trojans in the second quarter en route to their third win in Sea View play. Senior forward Katie McKibben scored 10 points had 12 rebounds and 10 steals. Junior guard Shelley Edmunds added 10 points. The Mustangs finished off University (0-10) in the third quarter when Suzanne Cowley scored six points and had five rebounds to lead a 17-3 Mustang blitz.

Katie Ho and Cheryl Miller each had four points for University. Costa Mesa is 5-7 overall and 3-1 in league.

Newport Harbor 38, Saddleback 24--Sherri Kemper led the Sailors with 13 points and Jorie Nolen added nine as Newport Harbor improved to 3-1 in league play. Saddleback's Grace Terrado led all scorers with 16 points.

In South Coast League action:

Capistrano Valley 35, Irvine 30--Forward Heather Schoeny sank three free throws in the final minutes to seal the win for the Cougars at Capistrano Valley. Center Caylin Combs had 18 points and 12 rebounds and Schoeny added seven points and nine rebounds. Capistrano Valley (6-6, 2-1) led throughout the game, but Irvine made a late rally and was forced to intentionally foul Cougar players.

El Toro 68, Dana Hills 44--Vicki Mallet had 18 points for El Toro (3-0 in league). Irvine is 2-1 in league play.

In Sunset League action:

Huntington Beach 64, Westminster 40--Freshman guard Stefanie Pemper led the way for the Oilers with 16 points. Kelly Murray added 15 in the win at Huntington Beach. Devon Akita scored 12 points to lead Westminster, which fell to 0-2 in league and 7-9 overall. Huntington Beach is 2-0 in league. The Oilers face Edison at Edison Thursday.

Fountain Valley 63, Marina 36--Coming off two disappointing losses, first to Ocean View last Thursday and then to Brea-Olinda Monday night, the Barons were back in form easily beating the Vikings to go 1-1 in Sunset league play. Leading the Barons was Jackie Cook who scored 15 points and had 10 rebounds. Kerri Clower had 13 points. Stefanie Sabelino and Temre Kuester each had 10 points for Marina. Fountain Valley faces Westminster Thursday at Westminster.

Ocean View 74, Edison 52--The Seahawks got 27 points from center Trina Vlachos and 17 from forward Michelle Chomicz. Denise Ogburn led Edison with 22 points and 7 rebounds. The Seahawks are 2-0 in league play, Edison is 1-1.
