The City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to oppose a halfway house planned for more than 40 convicted felons in a North Long Beach neighborhood.
"The state proposal, if implemented, would literally turn convicts loose in our residential neighborhood--morning, noon and night," Councilman Warren Harwood said.
Under the proposal sponsored by Harwood--in whose district the planned facility would be located in the 6900 block of Atlantic Avenue--letters of opposition will be sent to Gov. George Deukmejian and other state officials.
In addition, the city manager and city attorney are to report on possible actions to take to block construction of the facility, which is being planned by the state Department of Corrections.
