A gunman was fatally wounded by a police officer after he allegedly fired a handgun into the air and pointed the weapon at officers in front of a bar in South-Central Los Angeles, police said. Felipe Martinez, 25, was shot in the stomach during a confrontation with Officer Ronald E. Hodges, 32, in front of the La Portranca Bar, 7026 S. Broadway. Investigators said that Martinez, for no apparent reason, pulled out a pistol and fired several rounds into the air and later pointed the weapon at Hodges. The officer fired one shot from a 12-gauge shotgun, killing Martinez.
