Jay Kanter has been named president of worldwide motion picture production for United Artists, one of the two newly created film divisions of Culver City-based MGM/UA Entertainment Co.
The lateral move from Kanter's former position as president of MGM/UA's worldwide production reunites him with Alan Ladd Jr., who last week was named president and chief executive of United Artists Corp. and vice chairman of the board of MGM/UA Entertainment Co.
The shift was widely anticipated following the announcement that UA and MGM Films Inc. would operate as autonomous film divisions.
Kanter had been a partner in Ladd Co. from its formation in 1979 to its dissolution last year. He also worked with Ladd as senior vice president of worldwide production at 20th Century Fox Film Corp. in the mid-1970s, when Ladd was president of the studio. Kanter began his career with MCA Inc. in the 1960s.
