NBA Roundup : Aguirre Scores 49 Points in 111-109 Win Over 76ers

Mark Aguirre, disappointed at not being named to the NBA All-Star game earlier in the day, scored 49 points Monday night to bring the Dallas Mavericks a 111-109 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers at Dallas.

Derrick Harper made two free throws with 12 seconds left and Brad Davis added another with six seconds left to clinch the victory.

"I was kind of upset," said Aguirre, who made last year's All-Star game. "I came out to win."

Aguirre hit 17 of 25 shots from the field and 13 of 19 free throws to surpass his old career-high of 46 points. Aguirre scored the Mavericks' first 10 points and hit 13 of 15 shots from the field in the second quarter. He hit scored nine straight points in the fourth quarter, the last of them putting Dallas in front for good with 2:28 to play.

The Mavericks built a 13-point lead in the second half only to see the 76ers tie the game, 98-98, with 4:36 to play behind Julius Erving and Moses Malone. Aguirre scored eight points in the final three minutes to keep Dallas in front.

Houston 97, New Jersey 93--Akeem Olajuwon scored 22 points, grabbed 15 rebounds and blocked a last-minute shot to lead the Rockets past the Nets at Houston.

The victory made Houston's Bill Fitch the sixth coach in NBA history to reach 600 regular-season victories.

Denver 104, Utah 100--Alex English scored 24 points and the Nuggets held off the Jazz at Salt Lake City for their sixth straight victory.

Adrian Dantley had 26 points for the Jazz and Mark Eaton added 17 points and 13 rebounds.
