Development Planned on Old Ferry Dock Site

February 03, 1985

The Old Ferry Landing, a $6-million commercial development, will be built at the site of the old ferry dock in Coronado, and new diesel-powered ferries are expected to be constructed to cross the bay between the landing and the dock at the foot of Broadway in San Diego.

Kercheval & Associates Inc., project engineer, will work in conjunction with Delawie, Bretton, Wilkes Associates, the architect, on the four-acre Coronado project at the foot of Orange Avenue.

When completed in the spring of 1987, the project will have 30,000 square feet of commercial space, a 330-seat dinner restaurant, boat berthing facilities, bike paths, parks and parking lots.

Port Coronado Associates, a joint venture of Star and Crescent Boat Co. and Southwest Marine Inc., will begin construction early in 1986. The boat company plans to operate the new ferries and hopes to keep the fare for the 15-minute crossing to under $1.

The Old Ferry Landing will be built in a Victorian style to match the Hotel Del Coronado.
