A.C. Green scored a career-high 39 points and Oregon State overpowered Stanford, 83-73, Saturday in a Pacific 10 Conference game at Stanford to pull into a first-place tie with USC.
Oregon State (16-3, 6-2) jumped to an early 16-2 lead, but the Cardinal (10-9, 2-7) rallied to within 53-45 with 11 minutes left in the game.
Green, who scored 22 points in the second half, made a three-point play and added a pair of free throws, and Steve Woodside added a basket as the Beavers kicked the lead back up to 15 points with nine minutes left.
Andy Fischer was Stanford's top scorer with 14 points.
Washington 72, Arizona State 65--Detlef Schrempf shook off an ankle injury to score 20 points and the Huskies held on to beat the Sun Devils at Tempe, Ariz.
Schrempf, who was nearly held out of the game, did not start after aggravating a month-old ankle ailment during a 69-56 loss Thursday night at Arizona.
But the 6-9 senior came off the bench to score 10 first-half points as the Huskies raced to an early 20-7 lead en route to a 35-17 halftime bulge. Arizona State (9-10, 4-5) shot just 23% in the opening 20 minutes.
Washington (15-6, 6-3) led by 21 points with 14 minutes remaining only to see the Sun Devils score six points in a 21-second span and close the gap to 64-60 on Ron Singleton's jumper with 1:05 left.
Forced to foul, Arizona State got no closer as the Huskies sank six free throws in the final minute.
Paul Fortier added 15 points and Shag Williams had 14 for Washington. Singleton scored 16 for the Sun Devils.
California 50, Oregon 36--Sophomore guard Kevin Johnson scored 18 points and the Bears made 24 of 30 free throws to turn back the Ducks at Berkeley.
After losing freshman center Leonard Taylor to a sprained ankle early in the second half, Cal (11-8, 3-6) went to a control attack and shut down Oregon (3-6, 10-12) on defense.
After leading, 22-20, at the end of the first half, the Ducks scored only four points in the first 15 minutes of the second period as the Bears built a 35-26 lead with 4:28 left.
Chris Washington added 11 points for the Bears and Taylor scored nine before leaving the game. Oregon was led by Greg Trapp with 10 points.
Arizona 73, Washington State 56--Eddie Smith scored 19 points as the Wildcats (15-6, 6-3) breezed at Tucson. The Cougars (10-9, 2-7) committed 21 turnovers.
Morgan Taylor had 14 points and Pete Williams 11 for Arizona, which sank 66% of its shots from the floor. Ken Mathia had 13 points for the Cougars.
