Spain Lifts Gibraltar Curb on Moroccans

February 12, 1985|From Reuters

GIBRALTAR — Spain has lifted a restriction on Moroccans entering the country through the newly-opened frontier with the British colony of Gibraltar, a spokesman for the 1,400-strong Moroccan community here said Monday.

Mohammed Sarsri said Spanish border police are no longer preventing Moroccans from crossing unless they met a requirement of having at least $420 with them.

The Spanish move came after protests from Gibraltar's Moroccans saying the restrictions amounted to racial discrimination.

Spain fully reopened its border with Gibraltar last week after a blockage of nearly 16 years following and agreement with Britain to start talks on the future of the colony.
