Balboa Ski Club Now Meets in Two Locations

Orange County Singles

February 25, 1985|DUNCAN STRAUSS

"The group started in a little cafe on Balboa Island in 1956," explained Peggy Boland, of the Balboa Ski Club, which apparently has come a long way in its 29-year existence. The club now has a second chapter in north Orange County, a combined membership that is close to 600 and full affiliation with the United States Recreational Ski Assn.

Boland, who is president of the north county chapter, said the Balboa Ski Club operates year-round and offers such activities as white-water rafting and trips to Catalina in the summer months. There's also a tennis group within the club, she noted.

She emphasized, however, that skiing is the club's main focus. It organizes two weekend ski trips each month, throughout the ski season, for $85 a person. The fee covers transportation, lodging and meals. The club also has a racing team that competes at Mammoth and elsewhere with squads from American and Canadian clubs. Boland said the first-year membership fee of $47 "affords all the amenities of belonging to a national ski group, such as insurance, travel packages and discount books."

The club's south county chapter meets the first and third Tuesday of each month in Newport Beach. Meetings of the north county group are the second and fourth Tuesday of each month, in Anaheim Hills. This week's 8 p.m. meeting will feature an auction of ski trips to Lake Tahoe and Mammoth, and of assorted types of ski equipment. The meeting place is the Foxfire Restaurant, 5717 E. Santa Ana Canyon Road. For more information, call Peggy Boland at 996-3898.
