SAN DIEGO — Joe Butler's throwing error in the bottom of the ninth inning allowed pinch runner Steve Moscaret to score the winning run as the 12th-ranked San Diego State baseball team came from behind to beat Cal State Los Angeles, 6-5, in a non-conference game at Smith Field Thursday.
After taking a 4-0 lead in the first inning, the Golden Eagles (1-15) were shut down by the Aztecs' Steve Mills (3-0), who went 8 innings to pick up the win. The Aztecs (10-3) rallied for three runs in the third and two in the fourth innings to tie the game at 5. In the ninth, Ron Vanegas singled off Golden Eagles' starter and loser Donnie Herell (0-4), and after two walks, Frank Mendecina hit a slow roller to second. Butler tried to cut down Moscaret at the plate, but his throw was in the dirt.
The Aztecs play host to Cal State Los Angeles again today at 1 p.m. then play Loyola Marymount this evening at 6.
