The Nation : Haydon Has More Surgery

March 03, 1985

Murray P. Haydon, 58, the world's third artificial heart recipient, underwent nearly two hours of exploratory surgery after X-rays showed increased bleeding in his chest, spokesmen said. Doctors at Humana Hospital Audubon in Louisville, Ky., had no report on Haydon's condition, listed as stable before the operation. The bleeding began Tuesday when thin plastic catheters, used for monitoring blood pressure, were pulled out of the major arteries and veins connected to the artificial heart, which Haydon received Feb. 17.
