LONDON — French fried potatoes have been taken off the menu for new recruits in Britain's Royal Navy because the young men are too fat.
Instructors banned chips--as the British call them--at the navy's recruit training center in Torpoint, in the west of England, where all enlisted men begin their training. They acted after seeing too many "flabby new sailors."
"They are not as lean and lithe as they used to be," an officer said. "Many of these lads are too overweight."
