Muir High School outscored Ocean View, 14-6, in the third period Saturday night and went on to defeat the Seahawks, 50-45, in a Southern Section 4-A quarterfinal game played at Ocean View.
The Seahawks (21-6) missed their first five free throws in the third quarter and also missed three layups, while the Mustangs took control of the game. Ocean View cut Muir's lead to three points in the final quarter but couldn't surge ahead after starters Dana Douty and Michelle Chomicz fouled out with about a minute to play.
Pauline Jordan led the third-seeded Mustangs with a game-high 20 points, while Trina Vlachos scored 15 points for Ocean View. The Seahawks also received good games from Chomicz (12 points and 12 rebounds) and Laura Simek (10 points and 13 rebounds).
Ocean View had won its first Sunset League title in girls basketball this season, and this was the Seahawks' first trip to the quarterfinals.
