SACRAMENTO — Assembly Speaker Willie Brown's 1984 Jaguar and a bicyclist en route to work collided Tuesday at a sidewalk crossing on a driveway leading to the state Capitol garage, injuring the cyclist and damaging her bike.
Brown, driving to work after making a speech to University of California alumni, was unhurt.
The only damage to his sleek black car was a slight dent in the hood where the cyclist, Barbara Weiss, 26, apparently hit and catapulted over the vehicle.
Witnesses told police that Weiss was riding fast down the sidewalk, failed to obey a red light and slammed into Brown's vehicle. "She was going like hell. . . ," said one witness.
Brown estimated he was traveling 15 to 20 m.p.h. when he braked to avoid the crash.
"She hit me. The bike was going faster than I was going," the San Francisco Democrat said. "She was moving."
Weiss, an employee of the state Personnel Board, was taken by ambulance to a hospital, where she was reported in fair condition with a cut on her head.
