The Torrance High School girls soccer team ended its season with a spectacular 25-1 record. However, Torrance unfortunately struck the one loss at the wrong part of the schedule: the end.
El Toro handed Coach Dale Walker's squad a 2-1 overtime setback last week in a CIF 4-A semifinal match to end the Tartar season and send El Toro into the championship game against Claremont at 6 p.m. Friday at Gahr High School in Cerritos. The loss ended a 30-game Torrance winning streak dating to last season and a 49-game unbeaten record (including ties).
Torrance, defending section champ, fell when El Toro's Kathy Schick made the game-winning goal seven minutes into the first 10-minute overtime period. Schick's score came off a corner kick from Kim Carlander.
Torrance had opened the scoring at the 20-minute mark of the first half when Kelly Stevenson scored on a cross from Shannon Maddock, a sophomore who led Torrance with 59 goals this season.
Walker, who returns the majority of his team for next season, was understandably upset after the match but credited El Toro with a great effort.
