March 07, 1985

In a speech to a joint meeting of Congress, Italian Prime Minister Bettino Craxi called on the world's democracies to join in repudiating Latin American dictatorships. Craxi strongly denounced the rightist government of Chile, saying that the people there have "a right to free elections." And he urged coordinated action "to try to stop every authoritarian tendency and every unjustified recourse to violence." However, he cautioned that U.S. military intervention in leftist-led Nicaragua would be "a great mistake."
