Chris Welp, All-Pacific 10 conference center, scored a game-high 15 points and pulled down eight rebounds to lead the Washington Huskies to a 41-38 victory Thursday night over the Golden Bears at Berkeley.
The Huskies led by three points with 28 seconds left when Washington guard Shag Williams missed the front end of a one-and-one free-throw situation. Schrempf pulled down the offensive rebound, was fouled and hit both free throws to put the game away.
Washington's Detlef Schrempf and Clay Damon scored eight points apiece.
The Bears were paced by guards Kevin Johnson with 12 points and Chris Washington with 11.
Washington improved its conference record to 12-5 and 21-9 overall. California fell to 4-13 and 12-15.
Washington St. 78, Stanford 68-- Forward Joe Wallace scored a game-high 23 points, including 13 in the second half, as the Cougars defeated the Cardinal at Stanford.
The Cardinal led until the final minute of the first half, when Keith Morrison sank a long jumper just before the buzzer to give the Cougars a 35-34 lead at the break.
