UC Irvine Medical Center Library now has an expanded facility in Orange on the 33-acre site of the Orange County Medical Center at Chapman Avenue and the Santa Ana Freeway.
The $2.1-million, 25,000-square-foot library represents the initial phase of a 300,000-square-foot medical megastructure designed by the architectural firm of Leo A. Daly for the site.
The library contains library stacks, reading areas, classrooms, work areas and offices. In addition to 30,000 books and journals, the new library contains a computer-assisted reference service that provides access to such medical databases as Medline, Cancerlit and Psychological Abstracts.
General zoning for the site calls for inpatient, ambulatory care and teaching/research. The next building in the megastructure program will be the Diagnostic Services Module, which will be attached to the west side of the library.
