Interferon can stop the AIDS virus from multiplying in test tubes, but this and other promising therapies will probably have to be administered while potential victims are still healthy, researchers say. The latest study, at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, adds interferon to a growing list of drugs that can halt the multiplication of HTLV-3, the virus that apparently causes the lethal disease. No one knows whether it will actually ward off AIDS in people.
