Smith struck out eight and allowed only three hits.

Eric Kerner went the distance on the mound, striking out nine while allowing six hits, to lead Taft High to the win at El Camino Real.

Kennedy High scored eight runs in the third and fourth innings to win its league opener at Monroe.

Alhambra 7, Burbank 0

Mario Molina pitched a five-hit shutout as Alhambra High downed Burbank in a Foothill League game at home.

Oak Park 6, Santa Ynez 4

Shortstop Andy Silverman slugged a two-run homer in the top of the seventh inning to pace Oak Park High.

Poly 10, Hollywood 0

Polytechnic High pitcher Jim Welch had a no-hitter for six innings, but Hollywood managed to spoil his bid in the seventh.

Van Nuys 8, Birmingham 6

Van Nuys High pounded out 10 hits in the first inning en route to the victory over Birmingham.

The Wolves' first-inning surge was paced by Gogo Barajas' double.
