San Diego College Baseball : Erb Pitches a Five-Hit Shutout

SAN DIEGO — Freshman right-hander Mike Erb scattered five hits and struck out 10 to lead San Diego State to a 7-0 victory over Western New Mexico in a nonconference college baseball game Thursday night at Smith Field.

Aztec right fielder Chris Gwynn had two hits to raise his batting average to .550 (11 for 20) and knocked in three runs as SDSU (22-9) won for the fifth straight time and for the 10th time in its last 12 games.

The Aztecs gave Erb (4-1) all the runs he needed in the second inning when Steve Hokama doubled to drive in Mark Grace and, after an error, Gwynn singled in two runs to make it 4-0. SDSU added a pair of runs in the fifth inning and another in the eighth to pin the loss on Western New Mexico starter Greg Williamson (2-1). Western New Mexico fell to 20-7.

Eastern Connecticut 11, USD 2--Bob Sartori and Tom Irvine combined a three-hitter and Paul Martineau had three hits and drove in two runs to lead Eastern Connecticut past the Toreros in a nonconference game at USD.
