Countywide : Group Honors Lawyer for Volunteer Services

March 25, 1985|James S. Granelli

Santa Ana lawyer David L. Gravell was named Volunteer of the Year Friday for giving the equivalent of a month of his time last year to handle legal problems for indigent clients in civil cases.

Gravell was given the award at a luncheon of Amicus Publico, an organization of about 200 Orange County lawyers who provide free legal services to the poor in such areas as family law and landlord-tenant law.

The group's president, Garvin F. Shallenberger of Costa Mesa, said that more than half the volunteer work done by Amicus Publico lawyers last year related to family law matters.

"The work of Amicus Publico is what makes it a true vocation, not just a job, for lawyers," said luncheon speaker Alfred T. Goodwin, a 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals judge.

Also singled out for praise in handling four or more cases at no charge last year were John F. Beau of La Habra, John J. Doody of Huntington Beach, Kenneth E. Mick of Huntington Beach, Edward G. Spilsbury of Irvine, Richard G. Vogl of Santa Ana and Sandy A. Wilson of Westminster.
