Area Roundup : Orange County Soccer All-Stars to Meet L.A. All-Stars

Some of the best prep soccer players from Los Angeles and Orange counties will compete in the third Brea Kiwanis High School All-Star Soccer game Saturday at Gahr High in Cerritos, beginning with the girls' all-star game at 6 p.m.

The Orange County boys' team, led by Times' Player of the Year Jon Kelly (Dana Hills) and first-team, all-county selections Darren Bedolla (Cypress), Curiel Garcia (Anaheim), Mike Medlin (Esperanza) and David Santiago (Brea-Olinda), will meet the Los Angeles All-Stars at 8 p.m.

The Orange County girls' team is led by Times' All-County selections Treanna Clinton (Laguna Hills), Mandi Robertson (Edison), Shelly Trimble (Troy) and Michelle VonFlotow (La Quinta).

Chapman College junior forward Leone Patterson has been named to the Kodak All-District VIII Women's Basketball team for the second straight year. Patterson is one of six collegiate players selected to the team, which is chosen by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association.

Patterson, a native of Wellington, New Zealand, was the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. Player of the Year and led Chapman to a 25-4 record. She led the Panthers in scoring (13.7 points per game) and free throw percentage (.727) and was the only CCAA player ranked in the Top 10 in scoring, rebounding, field goal percentage, free throw percentage and assists.

Cal State Fullerton, the nation's top-ranked women's softball team, is at the University of Hawaii this weekend for the Hawaii Invitational.

The Titans (26-4) will face UC Santa Barbara in a first-round game today at 3 p.m. Other first-round games include Chapman College vs. Pacific, Fresno State vs. Oregon and second-ranked UCLA vs. Hawaii. The double-elimination tournament will continue through the weekend, with the championship game scheduled for Monday at 3 p.m.

Fullerton, led by pitchers Debbie Mygind (13-1, 0.287 ERA) and Susan LeFebvre (11-3, 0.41 ERA) has allowed only 18 runs and has scored 94. The Titans won the PONY Invitational Tournament last weekend, beating fourth-ranked Cal Poly Pomona in the championship game, 1-0.

The Huntington Beach Golden Eagles will compete for the state championship of the American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO) boys' 8-9 year-old division this weekend at AYSO Park in Upland. The Golden Eagles, coached by Ron Calisher, won the Section 11 (Orange and San Diego counties) championship to qualify for the state finals.

The Golden Eagles will meet the Section 1 champions in a first-round game Saturday at 10 a.m.

Some of the top wheelchair athletes in the country will be directing the Fifth Junior Wheelchair Sports Camp for physically disabled children April 1-5 at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo. The camp will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. daily.

The camp is free to participants and will include instruction in such sports as tennis, swimming, basketball, track and field, archery and weight training.

UC Irvine has announced a $3,000 contribution from the Fieldstone Company of Newport Beach for the underwriting of three UCI triathlon camps and the development of a triathlon training center on campus.

The triathlon camps, to be held June 28-30, July 19-21 and August 23-25, will concentrate on the improvement of swimming, running and bicycling skills required of triathletes. Additional features will include video taping, nutritional analysis, medical evaluation and the use of an immersion tank to measure body fat.

Former Rams quarterback Jeff Rutledge, now with the New York Giants, will be the featured speaker at the Saddleback Valley Athletes In Action Sports Club meeting Monday at Grace Community Church in El Toro, beginning at 7 p.m. . . . The seventh Anteater Run, a 5 and 10K race scheduled for April 6 at UC Irvine, has been cancelled by UCI officials. . . . April 5 is the final day to register for the Ektelon Racquetball Championships, which will be held April 11-14 at the Los Caballeros Racquet and Sports Club in Fountain Valley.
