SAN DIEGO — Valhalla High School's first loss of the season wasn't a pretty sight.
Against Helix, the Norsemen committed nine errors, issued eight walks and hit a batter as the Highlanders won, 13-5, at Valhalla. Helix had only eight hits, but was able to capitalize on the Norsemen's generosity.
"It was a helluva loss," Valhalla Coach John Marlow said. "We just gave it away."
Bryan Fisher and Jackie Schniepp had two hits and three RBIs each for Helix, which improved to 5-3 overall and 2-1 in league play. Willie Jarvis was the winning pitcher for Helix. Rick Tennent (2-1) was the loser for the Norsemen, who fell to 7-1, 1-1.
In other Grossmont League action:
Grossmont 5, Monte Vista 1--Shon Boney hit two home runs and Donnie Angotti added one as the Foothillers won their third straight in league. Dave Richards (3-3) picked up the win for Grossmont while Monte Vista fell to 4-4 overall and 1-2 in league.
Santana 8, Mount Miguel 7--Jim Franco's leadoff home run in the seventh inning gave the Sultans the win over the Matadors (1-8, 0-3) at Mount Miguel. Jeff Gay also hit a two-run homer for Santana. Jim Tatum (2-0) was the winner for the Sultans (6-2, 2-0).
El Capitan 9, El Cajon 3--Mike Reed and Jim Medlin combined on a five-hitter and Curtis Canfield and Dave Nowlan each drove in two runs to lead the Vaqueros (2-6, 1-2) past the Braves at El Cajon. Mark Cassano had three hits including a two-run homer for El Cajon (2-6, 1-2).
In the Metro League:
Hilltop 2, Castle Park 1--Lancer catcher Todd Pratt tripled home Tyler Ackerson to break a 1-1 tie in the fifth inning and give Hilltop (6-3, 1-1) the win at home. Pratt then moved to the mound and saved the game for starting pitcher Brad Platt (1-0). Castle Park fell to 4-5-1 overall and 1-1 in league play.
Montgomery 14, Southwest 4--At Southwest, the Aztecs scored nine runs in the first inning and routed the Raiders. Center fielder Clemente Corona hit a home run, triple and single, while driving in five runs. Third baseman Ramiro Ramirez had two hits--including a three-run triple in the first inning--and had four RBIs. Lee Langevin (2-0) was the winner for Montgomery (7-1-1, 1-0-1).
Mar Vista 6, Marian 2--Manuel Mandivil improved his record to 5-0 with a six-hitter and Victor Vargas had three RBIs including a two-run homer to lead the Mariners (8-2, 2-0) past the Crusaders (1-4, 0-2) at Marian.
Sweetwater 6, Coronado 5--The Red Devils (4-5, 2-0) opened a 6-0 lead and then hung on to defeat the Islanders (3-3, 0-2) at Coronado.
In the Avocado League:
El Camino 10, Carlsbad 8--Mike Knudson, Ernie Spears and Billy Morris all had three hits and Casey Malauulu and Mike Castro each drove in a pair of runs to lead the Wildcats (5-4, 2-0) past the Lancers (2-5, 0-2) at Carlsbad. Paul Paopao went five innings to get the win and improve his record to 3-0.
San Pasqual 12, Ramona 0--Robbie Adams pitched a two-hitter and struck out 15 to improve his record to 4-0 as the Eagles (6-1, 2-0) won on the road. Yale Fowler backed Adams' pitching with two hits and four RBIs as Ramona fell to 3-4, 0-1 in league.
San Marcos 12, Oceanside 0--Keith Pollins struck out 13 and pitched a four-hitter and Oceanside committed 10 errors as the Knights (7-2, 2-0) knocked off the Pirates (0-7, 0-2) at Oceanside.
In the Palomar League:
Orange Glen 4, Mount Carmel 1--Bill Painter (3-0) pitched a six-hitter and Chris Chesnut snapped a 1-1 tie with a two-run single in the sixth inning to lead the Patriots (4-4-1, 1-0) past the visiting Sundevils (5-4, 1-1). Dave Johnson had two hits for Orange Glen, while Mount Carmel scored its only run on Danny Rumsey's sixth home run of the year in the first inning. Poway 7, San Dieguito 6--Despite a 12-strikeout performance by the Mustangs' Frank Stoddard, the Titans (7-3, 1-1) still prevailed at home, scoring a run in the bottom of the seventh to win it.
Torrey Pines 7, Vista 6--The Panthers (5-4, 1-1) missed a chance to take over sole possession of first place in the league by losing to the Falcons (3-5, 1-1) at Torrey Pines.
