Kevin Kurz, who scored 53 points in one game and averaged 28, was named the Southeast area's Player of the Year at The Times' annual awards ceremony Tuesday night at the Harry Chandler Auditorium in the Times Mirror Building in downtown Los Angeles.

Charlie LaCommare of Bell Gardens was named Coach of the Year. LaCommare guided a team, which had been given little chance to succeed, to a 16-9 season. The Lancers won 10 of their last 11 games to make the playoffs.

Kurz, a 6-foot-4, 200-pound senior, also averaged 10.5 rebounds for a 17-7 Schurr team that reached the playoffs.

In the South Coast area, Curtis Williams of Dominguez was selected as Player of the Year and his coach, Ernie Carr, was named Coach of the Year.
