State officials have levied a $203,794 fine on Union Oil Co. of California for allegedly violating worker safety laws at its Wilmington refinery.

The California Occupational Safety and Health Administration issued 32 citations last month to Union Oil for alleged worker safety violations, among which were exposure to asbestos and inorganic arsenic, excessive noise levels, failure to label dangerous substances and lack of respiratory equipment, according to Bob Garcia, regional director for the agency.

Union Oil has appealed the citations, Garcia said.
