April 11, 1985

LaRonda Poydras, a three-year star player at Morningside High, and Sister Michael Mioli of St. Mary's Academy won the top South Bay honors at The Times' girls' high school basketball awards program Tuesday.

Poydras, a senior and a repeater on the 10-girl all-South Bay team, was named South Bay player of the year. Last year, her Morningside teammate Monica Raspberry was the top player.

Poydras, a guard-forward at 5-6, averaged 16 points, 11 assists and 9 rebounds and led Morningside to its perennial league title, 8-0 in Pioneer League competition. She averaged 14 points, 8 rebounds and 7 assists as a junior in helping Morningside win the CIF 4-A title.

Sister Michael Mioli has fashioned St. Mary's in Inglewood into one of the CIF's most consistent teams. Her Belles were 21-3 this season and won their second straight Camino Real League title, going 12-0 in league play.

Poydras was joined on the all-South Bay team by sisters Celine and Andrea Kabwasa of Hawthorne, Christine Bogdanovich of Mary Star of the Sea, Karyn Bolger of San Pedro, Catherine Erhard of Mira Costa, Donna Hervey of Inglewood, Sandra Johnson of St. Mary's, Jennifer Rosen of South Torrance and Corine Sandfry of Bishop Montgomery.
