The Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District is one of the beneficiaries of a $25,000 arts education grant that the Music Center Education Division has received from Paramount Pictures Corp. to fund live performances in four communities.

"Salute to Americana," a joint performance on May 17 of the Los Angeles Master Chorale and Norwalk-La Mirada students, is co-sponsored by Paramount Pictures and the Music Center Education Division as a fund-raiser.

The Norwalk-La Mirada district was chosen from 22 districts that applied for the grant this year, said Pat St. John, a spokeswoman for the Music Center.

About 150 students in kindergarten through 12th grade have been chosen to participate in the performance, said Patricia Bright, a spokeswoman for the district. Sixty percent of proceeds from ticket sales will benefit the district's instrumental music program, and 40% will go to the Music Center Education Division. The performance is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in Excelsior High School auditorium.

Districts are chosen on the basis of how much community support they can offer for the performance, she said. Other districts chosen this year were the San Marino and Culver City unified school districts and four districts in the Newhall-Saugus area of Los Angeles County.

"We're encouraging the schools who will get out and beat the bushes," St. John said.
