Tv Auto Ads Hit A Record High

NEW YORK — Television isn't hurting when it comes to billion-dollar auto advertising, TV's second-largest category, exceeded only by food and food products.

TV ads for autos hit $1,469,986,600 in 1984, according to the Television Bureau of Advertising, up 25% from 1983's $1,177,463,600.

The largest television advertiser was General Motors Corp., which spent $240.4 million in 1984, up 22% from its 1983 expenditure of $197,267,000.

Ford came in second with an ad total of $200,656,200, a 1% drop from the previous year, while Chrysler was third with $121,083,900, an increase of 18% over 1983.
