April 25, 1985

SAN DIEGO — Curtis Gates of Colby Community College in Colby, Kan., is the third guard to sign a national letter of intent with the San Diego State men's basketball team. Gates averaged 24 points, 6.8 rebounds and hit 61% of his shots from the field in 30 games last season.

The 6-foot 3-inch leaper had 81 dunks last season, and set a single-game school record of 46 points against Highland College. His run-and-gun Colby team (28-5) averaged 81.8 points per game.

Gates joins 5-11 point guard Tracy Dildy from Martin Luther King in Chicago and 6-3 guard Josh Lowery from Oakland Tech in Oakland. Steffond Johnson, a 6-8 transfer from Louisiana State University and Kevin Brown, a 6-8 center from Ottawa Hills in Grand Rapids, Mich., are the others to sign with the Aztecs.

Brooke Meadows of Boulder High in Boulder, Colo., is one of three players to sign letters of intent with the San Diego State women's basketball team this week. The 6-3 center averaged 15 points, 9 rebounds and 3 blocked shots per game. Meadows is the sister of Rocker Meadows, a redshirt player on the Aztec men's volleyball team.

Ilene Hauser, a 5-7 guard from Alemany High in Mission Hills, averaged 19.9 points and 4.5 assists. Hope Ceasar, a 5-10 forward from Waukegan West High in Waukegan, Ill., averaged 27.8 points and 15 rebounds this season.

Earlier this month, the Aztecs signed highly recruited Jessica Haynes, a 5-10 forward from Omaha Central High in Omaha, Neb.
