TAIPEI, Taiwan — The flight of a China Airlines Boeing 737 with 107 people aboard was interrupted Friday by an army sergeant who claimed to have a container of acid, the Chinese Nationalist government said. The pilot landed the plane in Taipei, where the hijacker surrendered without resistance.
Taiwan's Civil Aeronautics Administration said the man, identified as Lei Yao-hwa, 26, told a stewardess shortly after takeoff that he wanted to divert the intra-island flight to Hong Kong.
A stewardess informed the pilot, who ignored the demand and returned the plane to Taipei, where it was surrounded by officers.
Lei's container held only water, not acid, police said.
