The City Council, continuing its anti-discrimination efforts, passed a law last week under which landlords will be fined up to $1,000 for refusing to rent to students.

The ordinance also prohibits apartment owners from evicting students simply because they are students.

Although West Hollywood is not known to have a large student population, Randy Banis, a UCLA student who chairs a coalition of southern California student groups, said surveys hint that discrimination against students is prevalent in the area.
