Murdoch Eyes Citizenship

May 03, 1985|Associated Press

WASHINGTON — Australian publisher Rupert Murdoch told the Federal Communications Commission today he will become an American citizen so he can clear a legal hurdle and become an owner of six of the biggest TV stations in the country, one of the commissioners said.

Commissioner James H. Quello said Murdoch told him he would not apply for the transfer until he became an American. Another participant in the meetings said he believed Murdoch would sell his newspapers in New York and Chicago to comply with the rules.
