GOP Sets Sights on 100,000 Democrats Who'd Rather Switch

May 07, 1985|Associated Press

WASHINGTON — Republican Party leaders, encouraged by recent converts among conservative Sun Belt Democrats, launched a campaign today to persuade 100,000 Democrats to switch their party allegiance to the GOP in the next 100 days.

"Political realignment is taking place," Frank Fahrenkopf Jr., chairman of the Republican National Committee, told a news conference at which he announced the registration drive.

Appearing with Fahrenkopf was White House political adviser Edward J. Rollins, who said President Reagan will have a reception sometime during the GOP campaign for officeholders who have switched parties.

"We have some role models that are out there, starting with the President himself," who is a former Democrat, Rollins said.
