A former nurse to the late actress Janet Gaynor pleaded guilty in Indio Superior Court to a charge of grand theft after admitting that she stole two rings worth $25,000 from the ailing actress in 1983. "It was a total surprise," Riverside County Deputy Dist. Atty. Randall White said of Jacque Williams' confession. White said the defendant seemed "somewhat downcast" as more witnesses prepared to take the stand for the prosecution in the trial. Williams, whose sentencing was set for June 3, faces up to three years in state prison on the felony conviction. The prosecution said Williams took the jewelry from Gaynor's dresser drawer at the movie star's home in Desert Hot Springs. Gaynor was injured in a traffic accident in San Francisco on Sept. 2, 1982. She died slightly more than two years later.
