The City Council has approved formation of an ad hoc committee to plan a self-supporting preschool in an industrial area, City Manager Don Powell said.

The city will sponsor the school and may donate money to start it, but residents and businesses will be responsible for the cost of operating the school, Powell said.

"There is a tremendous lack of care available," he said, and members of the business community have shown "a fair amount of interest" in a preschool.

Priority for admission to the preschool would be given to children of single, working residents, Powell said.

The city now subsidizes two child-care centers that supervise about 100 children before and after school. An all-day, self-supporting program for 15 preschoolers is scheduled to begin June 24 at the Los Nietos Child Care Center.
