Salvadoran President Jose Napoleon Duarte, delivering the commencement address at the University of Notre Dame, promised to "score a victory for peace" in his war-torn country. Referring to a Fighting Irish football legend, Duarte, a 1948 Notre Dame engineering graduate, said: "I will return to my home stadium, El Salvador, where I will have to imitate George Gipp and score a victory for peace. George is up there with all the Notre Dame saints we have in heaven, and through him I want to invoke the power of God."
