A radio station has agreed to provide $4,000 annually for the next five years in scholarships to economically disadvantaged communications students at Compton College and in the Compton Unified School District.

The money, provided by FM music station KJLH, will be distributed among two seniors in the school district and two to four students at the college, according to Sumire Gant, cable and public affairs manager for the City of Compton. She said the first scholarships will be awarded May 30 and June 2 on the basis of essays submitted by students.

Gant said the Los Angeles station plans to move its studio to Compton and hire interns from the school district and the college.
