LISBON — About 400 computer staff people in Portugal's social security services began a four-day strike Monday, threatening the payment of family allowances, unemployment benefits and pensions.

A civil service union spokesman said the strikers are demanding salaries equal to those paid in the Justice and Finance ministries, which he said are 30% higher.
