Large amounts of money may have been misappropriated from a chain of 24-hour health clubs that went bankrupt last week, Santa Barbara County Dist. Atty. Thomas Sneddon said. Preliminary investigation indicates that the Colorado-based Nautilus Swim and Fitness Centers, which operated 22 clubs in several states and had one under construction in Goleta, took in $235,000 a day in new memberships. But the firm had not processed thousands of requests for refunds, Sneddon said. It appears that many people who paid advance fees "will never see their money," he said.
