The Three Cs of Education

June 06, 1985

Bennett's article on education reflects either an alarming ignorance of or, more frighteningly, an intent to ignore the history and traditional aims of American education.

Moreover, he ignores the economic and social diversity of American society, mouthing homilies and generalizations in high-sounding terms that we educators are so justly accused of employing when discussing educational theory.

And voucher treatment and tuition tax-credit plans, so dear to Bennett and President Reagan, can only bring about segregation and factionalism in the society--factionalism based upon prejudice, dogmatism, exclusiveness, sectarianism, and discordance--undermining the very foundations of democratic American education.
