The Los Angeles County Health Department will conduct inspections and test employees of massage and acupressure businesses under an agreement approved by the City Council.

The Health Department will conduct surprise inspections of businesses at a cost of $58 each that will be paid by the city from business license fees. Employees will be tested for their knowledge of anatomy, physiology, hygiene and the theory of massage at a cost of $115 that will be paid by employees.

Police Capt. Jim Popp said the recent adoption of ordinances requiring the inspections and tests are an attempt to create a deterrent to prostitutes.
