Dr. James Lyle of Hermosa Beach has won the Lyle E. Gibson Distinguished Teacher Award at California State University, Dominguez Hills. Lyle, a chemistry professor, developed a summer organic chemistry course for premedical students. He was commended for his skills in organizing material and presenting it to students understandably.
Flutist Eunice Kim, a sophomore at Torrance High School, has won cash awards from the Peninsula Symphony Assn. and the California Federation of Women's Clubs. She also was one of 11 flutists from 300 entrants to participate in the All-Southern California Honor Band. She has studied the flute for three years at the South Bay Conservatory.
Arminta Harness of Manhattan Beach has been given the Alumni Merit Award by the Alumni Council of Lindenwood College, St. Charles, Mo., for outstanding professional achievement. Harness was selected from five nominees who were screened by the Alumni Council, which represents 10,000 Lindenwood alumni. Harness, a retired Air Force colonel, joined the service as an engineer after graduating from Lindenwood in 1949. She also managed laboratory planning for Hanford Engineer Development Laboratory in Richland, Wash., for five years.
North High School student Jackie Mowery of Lawndale received the Ruth Gross Memorial Award and a savings bond for contributions to Torrance volunteer organizations. Four other Torrance students received awards from the Torrance Coordinating Council and the Torrance Police Officers Assn: Pearl Yu, Cheryl Peterson, Helen Suhr and Michelle Gay. Gross was a founding member of the council, a civic organization.
