A Tribute to Dr. Linus Pauling

June 09, 1985

As a scientist and humanist, Dr. Linus Pauling has achieved the highest peak in the struggle to understand our connections with each other and all the elements that make up our interdependence.

Lee Dye's article about Pauling delivered an eloquent description of him as a human being, scientist, a political person of depth and warmth, striving on all levels to follow his conscience and his dedication to the principles of decency ("The Deeply Personal War of Linus Pauling," June 2). His ability to question, to act, to take the criticism of colleagues with courage and conviction--all in the interest of developing a kinder world--presents a fine, inspirational portrait of human decency and human potential.

Linus Pauling is indeed a man to be cherished among us for now and all times.
