If the California Highway Patrol stops you after June 30, you'd better have proof that you have some kind of vehicle insurance. Otherwise, a second offense will be added to your ticket, CHP Commissioner James Smith said. For most motorists, the required proof, which can be oral or written, is the name of an insurance company and policy number or the certificate of deposit number issued by the Motor Vehicles Department to self-insured motorists. Smith said vehicles will not be stopped just to check for proof of insurance, but drivers stopped for some other violation will be asked for the proof.
