A plan to assess businesses along Valley Boulevard to pay for parking lots will be considered by the City Council at a public hearing at 7:30 p.m. June 24 at City Hall.
The assessment area would extend along both sides of Valley Boulevard from Almansor street to the western city limits and include neighboring lots on Atlantic Boulevard and Garfield and Fremont avenues. About 400 businesses would be assessed three times the amount they pay for business licenses. The tax would raise about $100,000 a year.
David Carmany, director of housing and community development, said the money is needed to develop parking lots to relieve congestion along Valley Boulevard. The money also could be used for business promotion.
