The La Canada City Council has reaffirmed the city's intention to allocate $500,000 for the purchase of 55 acres of undeveloped land in Cherry Canyon. The money will be added to an expected $1.2-million state grant to buy the land south of Descanso Gardens and maintain it as a natural preserve.
The vote, at Monday's council meeting, was unanimous.
The grant money is in the 1985-86 state budget, which Gov. George Deukmejian has until July 1 to sign. The governor has the option of reducing or dropping items from the budget, but city officials said they are certain that the Cherry Canyon grant will remain intact.
Once the money comes through, the city will begin negotiating with landowner Michael Montgomery, a South Pasadena attorney, to buy the property, officials said.
Earlier this year, the city received a $90,000 grant from the Santa Monica Conservancy to buy land in Cherry Canyon for hiking and equestrian trails.
