Paramount High School students have raised nearly $7,000 to aid famine victims in Africa. History teacher Steve Makin said Tuesday that a majority of the 2,400 students at the school had participated during a one-week campaign to raise the money through donations and fund-raising activities.
"There are many poor students in our area. Many are on welfare. But they showed their concern for others by taking time out to help," said Makin, who helped coordinate the students' efforts.
The students sold candy and held noontime dances in addition to soliciting contributions from the community and making personal donations, Makin said.
The money is scheduled to be sent to Save the Children Foundation African Relief Fund in Westport, Conn., which will make the distribution, Makin said.
