Toxic Waste Lab Starts at UCLA

June 20, 1985

UCLA is establishing a Hazardous Waste Control Laboratory to help develop technology to combat the problem of toxic waste, according to Sheldon K. Friedlander, chairman of the UCLA Chemical Engineering Department and founder of the project.

The center will help develop cost-effective ways of reducing the volume and toxicity of waste and techniques for disposal of such material so it does not affect human health or the environment, he said.

Now in the organizational stage, the center has already attracted the interest of 20 major companies, Friedlander reported. The project will involve UCLA professors and students, federal and state agencies and industry.
